Women's Weightlifting Contests Open by Shattering World Records

Wang Mingjuan Wins Women's 48kg Weightlifting Title
World records were bettered here successively Monday, day one of the women's weightlifting competitions at China's Ninth National Games.

Wang Mingjuan from Central China's Hunan Province lifted a total of 210 kilograms in women's 48kg category after jerking up a weight of 112.5kg in her second try. The mark far surpassed the world record of 197.5kg set by China's Liu Xiuhua in Montreal, Canada in 1999.

Olympic gold medalist Yang Xia, also from Hunan, won the 53kg category title with a total weight 222.5kg. Her second try in the jerk, 125kg, leveled the world record although it was 2.5kg short of China's national record.

Li Zhuo of Northeast China's Liaoning Province ranked second to Wang Mingjuan with a total of 202.5kg after she lifted 112.5kg in her first attempt in the jerk and clean. The twenty-year-old is the junior women's world record holder of the 48kg category: snatch (85.0kg), jerk (113.0 kg) and total (195kg).

At the contest held in the afternoon, the women's snatch world record of 87.5kg in the 48kg category was surpassed several times before Wang Mingjuan set the heaviest mark at 97.5kg in her third try.

Wang is not a well-known lifter though she once came second in the 48kg category by snatching 87.5kg at the domestic women's weightlifting championships in 2000 in her home city Changsha, provincial capital of Hunan, and ranked third in total of 187.5kg.

Fifteen strongwomen participated in the 48kg category event, and 13 competed in the 53kg event.

Seven gold medals are on offer at the ongoing National Games' four-day women's weightlifting competitions, respectively for the categories of 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 75kg and over 75kg.

A total of 110 strongwomen from 28 delegations across China, long-time women's weightlifting powerhouse, are competing at the sports meet Among them are four Sydney Olympic gold medalists and eight world champions.

The venue for the event is set in Jiangmen, hometown of Olympic gold medalist Chen Xiaomin, who is to compete for the 63kg title. The small town is 101 kilometers south of Guangzhou, provincial capital of Guangdong.
