Major English newspapers in Hong Kong devoted on Monday front-pages and special reports to China's signing into the World Trade Organization (WTO).

China Daily Hong Kong Edition said in its commentary China's entry into the WTO ushered in a new chapter in the history of China's reform and open-up.

Entering the WTO, not only will the country in its true sense represent the global trade system but the nation of 1.26 billion people also offers a huge market potential for international investors and in the business circle, it points out.

It is predictable that China's full WTO membership will ensure the nation greater access to world markets and bring it into the decision-making process on world trade issues, it said.

South China Morning Post, an English newspaper in Hong Kong, published a 16-page special report titled "WTO 2001" Monday. It says that the approval of China's accession to the WTO will mean China is a more integrated part of the world economy, with all the responsibilities that entails.

"It will also help hasten the often painful transformation of China's economy and create a more powerful trading nation," it notes.
