The construction of the Asian Packing Centre of the World Packing Organization (WPO) in Wenzhou, East China's Zhejiang Province, will propel the development of China's packing industry after the country's accession to the World Trade Organization, according to the president of the WPO,according to today's China Daily.

"I believe, after China's accession to the World Trade Organization, the Asian Packing Centre will give a strong push to the development of the packing industry in China, Asia and even the world at large," Sergio Haberfield, president of the WPO, said at the First China International Packing Summit held in Beijing over the weekend.

All eyes will be focused on the construction of the centre, which is considered a major event in the world packing industry, the president added.

According to the general development plan, the Asian Packing Centre will occupy a total area of 5 square kilometres, consisting of the World Packing Network Centre, the Science and Technology Centre, the WPO Assembly Hall, a grand hotel, the Conference and Exhibition Centre and the Asian Packing Organization Tower, said Jin Xiangzuo, vice-president of the China Packing Technology Association.

A 30 square-kilometre free trade processing zone and a 20 square-kilometre packing industry park are also in the works, with the aim of attracting 60 billion yuan (US$7.25 billion) in domestic and foreign investment.

Total investment in the project will top 20 billion yuan (US$2.4 billion), said Jin, who is also president of the Asian Packing Centre.

Construction of the centre will help Chinese packing firms upgrade their technology, enhance co-operation with foreign counterparts and promote the development of the country's packing industry, Jin added.

Currently, several hundred thousand packing firms operate in the country, combining for a total output valued at around 500 billion yuan (US$60.46 billion), only a fraction of the US$800 billion global packing market.

Moreover, the majority of Chinese packing firms are small in size and lack advanced equipment and technology, making it difficult to compete with foreign rivals. Enditem
