More than 1,410 agricultural products are given a special national designation recently as a move to inspire consumers' confidence.

The designated products, now bearing the label of being "Chinese Brand Names",, include capsicums, apples and animal products.

Agricultural machinery such as combined harvesters are also included in the list.

It is viewed as a way to cope with fierce competition with China's entry into WTO.

Fan Xiaojian, Vice Minister of Agriculture, said the quality of agricultural products made in China was not satisfactory in the past. Complaints from consumers have weakened the country's competitiveness in the world markets and depressed farmers' income growth.

The ministry believes that a State-sanctioned "brand name" label could boost prices. Some oranges costing 0.5 yuan might be able to fetch some 10 yuan with a brand name.
