Vice-President Hu Jintao Concludes Five-Nation Tour

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao concluded his five-nation visit in Europe and returned home Monday morning. Hu's paid a working visit to Russia, Britain, France, Spain and Germany respectively from October 27 to November 11. Hu held talks on bilateral relationships and issues of common concerns with heads of the five countries.

Chinese Vice President Concludes Five-Nation Tour
Hu paid a working visit to Russia, and then an official visit to Britain, France, Spain and Germany respectively from October 27 to November 11 at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, French President Jacques Chirac, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

During his five-nation tour, Hu held talks on bilateral relationships with the heads of the five countries.

  • During Hu's visit to Russia, he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov, and exchanged views on Sino-Russian relations and the current international situation, achieving common ground on many issues of great importance. Both parties highly praised the Chinese-Russian Good Neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation signed by Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Putin in July, stressing that their joint mission is to take effective action to implement the treaty, and to further enrich the partnership of strategic cooperation between the two countries, thereby advancing Sino-Russian ties in the new century.

  • Hu met with Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister Tony Blair, Duncan Smith, leader of the British Conservative Party, Lord Michael Heseltine, the chairman of the China-UK Forum and former British deputy prime minister, and Edward Heath, the former British prime minister and prominent businessmen and figures from other circles during his working visit. Both sides attach great importance to the all-round development of China-Britain partnership and are determined to make concerted efforts to safeguard world peace and promote development in the world.

  • Hu was awarded the Highest Distinction Honor Medal by France's Central School of Lyon during his visit to France. He praised that the French region of Rhone-Alps is playing a bigger role in pushing forward a comprehensive partnership between France and China. He met with with Robert Hue, president of the French Communist Party, French President Jacques Chirac and French Socialist Party Leader, French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine, etc, respectively and exchanged opinions on hot international issues of common concern.

  • Hu hold talks with Spanish King Juan Carlos I , during his two-day official visit to Spain. He said he was confident over the Future of Sino-Spanish Ties. In talks with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar in Madrid, both parties agreed to tighten links in different areas between their countries.

  • Hu arrived arrived in Berlin on November 8th, starting his three-day official visit to Germany, the last leg of his five-European-nation tour. The official visit by Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao to Germany is another milestone in solidifying German-Chinese relations, and both sides reached agreement on a wide range of issues including anti-terrorism and the role of the United Nations, according to German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
