  • Jiang: China to honor commitments and enjoy its rights

  • In his earlier inspection in Nanhai, Guangdong Province, south China, the president said that as a member of the WTO, China will have precious opportunities as well as great challenges.

During the process of economic globalization, the economic and technical cooperation of a country with other parts of the world can be expanded advantageously only after the country establishes an economic and trade administrative system adaptable to internationally accepted norms and in line with the country's actual conditions, said Jiang.

He said China's WTO membership brings hard-won opportunity while constituting considerable challenge for the country.

As a member of the WTO, said Jiang Zemin later in Guangzhou, China will strike a carefully-thought-out balance between honoring its commitments and enjoying its rights.

The WTO approved China's accession into the global trading body Saturday in Doha. Trade ministers from the 142 WTO members sealed China's entry at a second-day session of their fourth ministerial meeting. China and the WTO signed a membership accord Sunday.

  • Info-tech construction very important

  • In addition, during his inspection in Nanhai, Jiang attached a great importance to the construction of information technology. He called on leaders at all levels to give priority to the use of information technology in China's economic and social development so as to vigorously promote the development of national economy and informationization.

Jiang heard the report by Deng Yaohua, Communist Party Secretary of Nanhai, and watched a demonstration of the application of information technology by local government departments, used for systems of electronic administration, land management, and financial settlement.

He appreciated the achievements made by Nanhai on the construction of information technology. He said he is looking forward to a further success.

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the central government will adopt more measures to promote the use of information technology in its industrialization and modernization drive, said the president.

Jiang also inspected the situation of municipal construction of Guangzhou.

Located in the central region of Pearl River Delta, Nanhai is one of the birthplaces of Chinese traditional ceramic industry and modern textile industry. In recent years, the city attaches great importance to the development of the construction of informationization. In light of the instruction of the central government and President Jiang Zemin, the city launched massive projects to develop information drive. After several years' efforts, it successfully improved the regional economic development and working efficiency of governmental organs.
