Zhu Rongji's Southeast Asian trip fruitful

Upon the end of Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji's current Southeast Asian tour, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi described it as a great success in Bali, Indonesia early Sunday.

The Chinese Premier took part in the 5th leaders meeting between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (10--3), and the 5th leaders meeting between China and ASEAN (10--1). He started his five-day official visit to Indonesia on November 7.

Wang said that the two meetings, the first of its kind the East Asian countries had in the first year of the new century, are of great significance. To counter the global political and economic structures at present, the Chines premier put forward at the meetings a number of important proposals, which helped the success of the meetings and underlined the future process of an all-round cooperation among East Asian countries, Wang added.

The leaders of China and ASEAN countries all agreed to identify agriculture, telecommunications, human resources development, mutual investment and the Mekong river valley development as key areas of co-operation for the beginning of the new century and to establish a China-ASEAN Free Trade Area within 10 years.

During his meetings with President Megawati Soekarnoputri and other Indonesian leaders as well as representatives of the local business circle in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, the Chinese premier voiced China's support for the new Indonesian Government and the Indonesian people, Wang said.

"However the regional and international situation changes, China will remain a good friend to Indonesia and will support its efforts to maintain sovereignty, territorial integrity and economic recovery," Zhu said. Both Zhu and Megawati also agreed to upgrade bilateral cooperation in the trade-economic and other fields, and to enforce bilateral cooperation in dealing regional and world affairs in the new century.

The Chinese premier is scheduled to leave Indonesia for home Sunday morning.
