Opposition Forces Claim New Gains in Battle with Taliban

The Afghan opposition Northern Alliance claimed on Saturday that it had taken control of the whole of Sar-e-Pol province hours after its recapturing of Mazar-e-Sharif from the Taliban rulers, reports said.

The Afghan opposition Northern Alliance claimed on Saturday that it had taken control of the whole of Sar-e-Pol province hours after its recapturing of Mazar-e-Sharif from the Taliban rulers, reports said.

The Northern Alliance also said that it had taken control of the town of Hairatan, a key river port close to the Uzbekistan border.

Taliban Concedes Loss of Mazar-e-Sharif to Opposition

confirmed that the strategic northern Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif has fallen to the opposition Northern Alliance forces, reports reaching here from Afghanistan said.

Mazar-e-Sharif and its airport have been under the control of the Northern Alliance forces while the Taliban forces have retreated to Tangi Tashgurghan, a town some 60 kilometers to the east of the city, said the reports.

Meanwhile, the Taliban forces have already begun withdrawing from Balkh Province, which surrounds Mazar-e-Sharif, the Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press reported on Saturday.
