Sierra Leonean President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah Friday congratulated China on its forthcoming entry to the World Trade Organization (WTO) at the fourth WTO ministerial conference being held in Qatar's capital Doha.

President Kabbah conveyed his congratulations to his Chinese counterpart Jiang Zemin while accepting credentials from Fan Guijin, newly appointed Chinese ambassador to Sierra Leone.

Kabbah said he is very pleased to note that China has always attached great importance to developing its relations with Africa and actively expanding bilateral trade.

He expressed the belief that China's entry to the WTO will be surely conducive to furthering such relationship and to promoting its economic and trade assistance to Africa in particular.

The WTO ministerial conference, which was opened Friday, is to approve a package of agreements on terms for China's accession to the WTO on Saturday, ending the country's 15-year quest for its WTO membership.

Kabbah noted that despite the geographically long distance between the two countries, both Sierra Leone and China have shared similar objectives of promoting peoples' well-being and searching for equality, cooperation and mutual understanding among all nations in the world.

Kabbah stressed that Sierra Leone will resolutely safeguard its relations with China and continuously support the one China policy, adding that it is his hope that China will realize its peaceful reunification at an early date.

Ambassador Fan conveyed the cordial greetings from Chinese President Jiang Zemin to Kabbah and expressed his satisfaction with the fruitful cooperation between the two countries in various fields since they established diplomatic relations 30 years ago.

Fan said the Chinese government and people thanked the Sierra Leonean government for its consistent support to the one China policy.

Fan assured that he will do his utmost to boost the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries during his tenure.

During the meeting, President Kabbah also noted with pleasure the Chinese government's tremendous contributions to Sierra Leone's social and economic development, particularly to the advancement of the peace process.
