Chen Haosu, president of The Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), announced Friday in Beijing the establishment of the China-European Union (EU) Association (CEUA).

He Luli, vice-chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), and honorary president of CEUA, addressed the founding reception of the CEUA.

She said the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between China and the European Community, the predecessor of the EU, laid a solid foundation for the China-Europe relations 26 years ago.

Recently, she said, the relations have developed further as a result of joint efforts, with the two sides setting up an "all round partnership" and establishing regular meetings between the leaders.

"Now, with the stable political relations between China and Europe, economic and trade contact is increasing, showing a brighter future for cooperation," she said

China and Europe are facing new opportunities for strengthening their relations, she said, expressing her belief that the association will go with the new century and contribute to a favorable international environment by developing multilateral contact, increasing exchanges among local authorities and deepening cooperation in all fields.

Chen, also president of the CEUA, said that the CEUA is not only a coordinating organization for China-Europe cooperation, but a working place for cooperation as well.

The CEUA aims to develop all-around cooperation between China and EU, to establish trust and friendship and to lay a solid social foundation for good cooperative relations in the 21st century, Chen said.

The CEUA made a declaration at its founding conference Friday, saying both the modernization of China and the integration of Europe are changing the outlook of the world, and the ties between the two sides will help push forward the development of the mankind in the new century.

The CEUA, a non-governmental organization, is co-sponsored by the CPAFFC and nine other governmental and non-governmental organizations.
