Former US trade representative Charlene Barshefsky has said that China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) can offer opportunities for exports and growth, and help enhance regional peace and security.

As the worldwide economic slump has reduced America's total exports this year, US exports to China are up nearly 20 percent, Barshefsky said in an article contributed to the Washington Post, which was published on Friday.

She described as "especially strong" the exports growth in area of high-tech manufactured goods such as computers, semiconductors and scientific equipment.

If combined with Hong Kong, she said, China is likely to equal Germany as US fifth-largest export market this year.

This trend may accelerate if growth in China remains rapid, she added.

China's is expected to become a member of the WTO at its ministerial meeting now underway in Doha, capital of Qatar.

On Tuesday's interview with Xinhua, Barshefsky said that China's entry into the WTO "provides for the first time a stable foundation" for a broader US-China relationship and helps promote growth in surrounding nations in Asia and more broadly.

In the article, Barshefsky said that China's accession to the WTO "can help strengthen regional peace and security.

And "it will not remove deep-seated disagreements with the United States, but it can reduce the chance of confrontation and place common interest close to the center of the (U.S.-China) relationship," she added.

Barshefsky, now a Washington lawyer, said that it may strengthen the "elements of the bilateral US relationship with China" that would promote the stability.

She stressed that China's WTO accession "does have the potential to help a relationship marked by mistrust and often punctuated by crisis move toward the stability essential to peace and growth throughout the Asia-Pacific region."
