The Chinese government has mapped out the development goal for its township enterprises in different areas between 2001 and 2005.

According to officials with the country's Ministry of Agriculture, a document titled the Tenth Five-Year Development Plan for Township Enterprises was made public recently.

Township enterprises in east China which have already developed quickly should further sharpen their competitive edge by developing economies that are more tech-intensive, capital-intensive and export-oriented, according to the plan.

They should also strive to create more added value by improving quality of their products, using more new-high technology, concentrating more on deep processing and paying more attention to electromechanical products and high-tech products.

Meanwhile, township enterprises in east China should work to push forward the unified development of township enterprises in both central and western China.

In return, township enterprises in central China should take as priority economies that are labor-intensive and stress the processing of natural resources.

In addition, agricultural industrialization should be ranked high on central China's agenda.

Township enterprises should double their efforts to introduce more advanced technology, equipment and skilled professionals, and seize the opportunity to develop a number of brand-name products.

They should also team up with large and medium-sized state-owned enterprise within the region and join the country's state-designated priority projects, the plan designated.

It called on enterprises in western China to transform their comparative advantages from natural resources to economic strength by enhancing infrastructure construction and building up a better investment climate.

Frontier trade, tourism and processing of products with local characteristics or ethnic nature should be greatly boosted.

In addition, enterprises there should also engage in a wider range of cooperation with other regions, according to the plan.
