Premier Zhu on Chinese Economy and Bilateral Trade-Economic Cooperation
Chinese economy is poised to surmount difficulties and challenges of various kinds and in the first three quarters, as compared with the same period of the previous year, China's GDP had grown by 7.6 percent, Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said in in Jakarta. The economic cooperation and trade between China and Indonesia as well as other ASEAN countries should be constantly upgraded.
Visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said Thursday in Jakarta that the Chinese economy is poised to surmount difficulties and challenges of various kinds.
Speaking at a dinner hosted by the Business Community of Indonesia in his honor, Zhu said that in recent years, China has firmly responded to many challenges and sustained a rapid economic development.
"Since earlier this year, despite remarkable slowdown of world economy and trade, we have managed to keep a favorable momentum of economic growth. In the first three quarters, as compared with the same period of the previous year, China's GDP had grown by 7.6 percent," Zhu said.
He pointed out, "All this has been achieved as a result of our adherence to the policy of increasing domestic consumption demand and implementation of a proactive fiscal policy and a prudent monetary policy."
"In the meantime, we have seized every opportunity to move the reform, opening-up and restructuring efforts forward. These achievements demonstrate that the Chinese economy is poised to surmount difficulties and challenges of various kinds," added the Chinese premier
Given a population of nearly 1.3 billion, Zhu said, the per capita income of China remains quite low at present, notwithstanding its fast-growing economy. He stressed that there is still a long way to go for development.
"The development and expansion of the Chinese economy will never in any way pose a threat to any other country. Instead, it will contribute to peace, stability and development of this region and the world at large," Zhu said.
Need to Upgrade Bilateral Trade-Economic Ties
The Chinese Premier said that the economic cooperation and trade between China and Indonesia as well as other ASEAN countries should be constantly upgraded.
Zhu said China and Indonesia, with a long-standing friendship and as big developing countries with huge markets, enjoy an immense horizon for cooperation.
The Sino-Indonesian bilateral trade and economic cooperation has developed smoothly in recent years, the Chinese premier said.
"Last year, the Sino-Indonesian trade amounted to 7.46 billion U.S. dollars, seven times that of 1990 when we restored diplomatic ties. China has become the fifth largest trading partner of Indonesia. Chinese investment in Indonesia has been growing year by year," Zhu added.
In his words, substantial headway has been made in China-ASEAN economic cooperation as well.
Zhu said, "Last year, the two-way trade topped 39.5 billion U.S. dollars. In the first three quarters of this year, such trade registered a total of 30.3 billion dollars which represents a 6.8 percent increase over the same period of the previous year. The results are by no means easy given the remarkable slowdown in world economy and trade."
Zhu note that in the new century, the economic cooperation and trade between China and Indonesia as well as other ASEAN countries should be constantly upgraded.
To this end, Zhu proposed the following several suggestions: expanding the trade ties between China and Indonesia in diverse forms; strengthening cooperation in agriculture, energy, resources development and infrastructure sectors; and jointly promoting China-ASEAN economic cooperation and trade.
China stands ready to work together with Indonesia and all other ASEAN countries to further improve cooperation mechanisms, constantly broaden the dimensions of cooperation and foster greater development of China-ASEAN trade and economic relations, the Chinese premier noted.
