US Once Suggested "One Country, Two systems" to Taiwan Leader: Bush Senior
Former US President George Bush gestures while delivering a keynote address to international business leaders attending the World Productivity Congress in Hong Kong Thursday. "Will both the US and China work successfully to find a way to make the relationship in a cooperative and constructive manner?" said Bush," I think this is what US wants. I also believe that China does".
The US once tried to persuade Taiwan provincial leader to follow Hong Kong mode in reunification with the mainland, that is, through "One country, two systems", former US President George Bush revealed in Hong Kong on November 8. He also said that his son, the present US president, has always been friendly to China.
Bush Senior made the remark when attending the ongoing 12th World Productivity Congress in Hong Kong. Talking Taiwan issue, Bush said many years ago, when he was the president, he once asked Li Denghui why the issue can not be solved following Hong Kong mode. While Li put out many reasons to say the problem can not be solved that way.
Experts on Taiwan issue say Bush's remark showed that the US once considered supporting Chinese government to solve Taiwan issue through One country, two systems.
With China's WTO entry and increased trade links across the Strait, Bush hopes the issue could be solved gradually.
China Vastly Important to the US
The relationship between the United States and China is the most important bilateral relationship in the coming century as it regards a peaceful and prosperous world, former US president George H.W. Bush said Thursday in Hong Kong.
"I know and confidently tell you that China is vastly important to America," he said in his speech to participants of the Congress.
"Will both the US and China work successfully to find a way to make the relationship in a cooperative and constructive manner?" said Bush," I think this is what US wants. I also believe that China does."
The former US president said that he was confident the relationship will be handled well and that his son, the current American president, shared this view.
China's WTO Entry 'Very Good Thing'
He also said that "China's entry into the WTO is a very good thing."
"Trade will have immense effect on our relations," Bush said, "it will mean more trade and growth in China and a common base for the Sino-US economic relationship to grow."
The congress, under the theme of "Creating Wealth in the Connected Economy," opened Tuesday in Hong Kong and will continue to be held from Friday to Saturday in Beijing.
About 1,500 international speakers and delegates from over 40 countries and regions attended the forum addressing contemporary strategies, innovative approaches, new principles and best practices in productivity development to enhance competitiveness.
His Son Friendly to China
Besides, as father of present US president, Bush Senior says his son has been always friendly to China, and not like media's story that he adopted tough policy towards China, which only changed after the "9.11 Accident".
He says he once acted as US ambassador to China and thus has a deeper understanding of Sino-US relations which, as he takes it, is of vast importance to world peace and stability. He "feel very bad" on the Chinese embassy bombing in Yugoslavia and believes there are misunderstandings between the two countries. However, as long as close contacts and dialogues are kept, he believes all differences and problems would be gradually solved.
Talking about Hong Kong, Bush says he knows HKSAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa since child, for he is an old friend of his father Dong Haoyun.
