In early 2014, Liu Xiaoming, Chinese Ambassador to the UK, published an article in The Daily Telegraph condemning Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for his aggressive attitude toward re-militarizing Japan. After reading the article, the 98-year-old British WWII veteran Fred Seiker wrote to Ambassador Liu about his experience as a Japanese prisoner of war and being forced to work on the Thai-Myanmar railway.
Along with this letter, he included two copies of his book, Lest We Forget, an English edition and Chinese edition, which not only document his harrowing experience at the hands of the Japanese military, but also contain more than 20 pictures of Japanese soldiers torturing prisoners.
Seiker said: "I can't forgive Japan, because I can't betray my comrades-in-arms - those who died along the Thai-Myanmar railway and were buried thousands of kilometers from home. I am the only living survivor of the Far-East P.O.W. Association. I shall speak for the dead. Without their permission, I can’t give my forgiveness to Japan, since they can neither speak for themselves nor hear any confession from Japan." (Xinhua/Yin Gang)
