8. China Navy passed through the Strait of Magellan for the first time

A naval taskforce of the Chinese navy consisting of the guided missile destroyer “Lanzhou”, the guided missile frigate “Liuzhou” and the comprehensive supply ship “Poyang Lake” paid visits to three South American countries, namely, Chile, Brazil and Argentina, from September 3 to December 11, 2013.

The taskforce crossed the Strait of Magellan, marking the PLAN’s first traversing in this water channel. Stretching for 563 kilometers and with the narrowest section at 3.3 kilometers in width, the strait is well known for its high waves and tortuous waterway.
