In1945, Long Gate Tower collapsed without due maintenance.

In 1958, East Gate was dismantled for East Street expansion project.

In 1977, Small North Gate Tower was renovated.

During 1981-1982, city wall between Small North Gate to Madam Wall was maintained and reinforced by the combination way of brick-laying and backfill at layer with hammed earth.

During 1982-1988, Small North Gate and upper plane of Madam Wall were maintained to improve drainage performance, by making upper plane of Madam Wall’s middle part slightly higher than its both ends with backfill at layer with hammered earth, and paving floor with bricks.

In 1988, on-site measurement for Small North Gate was carried out before conducting overhaul in strict accordance with the principle of “repair damaged parts and restore to the original look”. After its worn-out column, beam frame, purlin and some other gallows timbers were replaced, and whole body thoroughly repainted, Small North Gate regained its glamour with original flavor maintained.

In 1989, worn-out wall at the entrance of East Gate was restored, with bricks re-laid and battlement rebuilt above wall.

In 1991 (January), Big North Gate and its barbican were repaired to soundly protect their overall architecture structure.

During 1991-1993, east city wall and part of west city wall were renovated under the joint efforts of authorities in charge of garden and heritage protections.

During 1992-1993, Zhongxuan Pavilion was rebuilt and its neighboring environment was consolidated by Xiangyang Heritage Protection Office.

In 1996, partial city wall at the entrance of East Gate collapsed due to excessive rainfall. For maintenance, a trapezoid opening was digged out in the first step, then followed by tamped foundation, masonry work with rubble and cement mortar, as well as treatment of drainage orifice.

During 1993-1999, the worn-out and collapsed parts of city wall were repaired.

In 2000, Madam wall was under maintenance.

In 2001, the west inner side of northern section of the wall (from Small North Gate to Madam Wall) was under maintenance; south side of western section, middle part and west side of southern section of the wall (all of interior wall) were also restored; the south side of eastern section of the wall (interior wall) was under repair (Xiangyang city wall was open to tour in 1988).
