Death toll rises to 14 in central China hotel fire (5)

A girl is carried to safety from a hotel fire that killed at least 14 people and injured 50 others yesterday. Some of the injuries were serious, officials said. A fire at an Internet cafe spread to the hotel on the building's upper floors in central China's Xiangyang City. The blaze broke out just after 6:30am and firefighters didn't manage to put it out until almost 9am. Some of the hotel's guests managed to escape while others were rescued by firefighters. The hotel said that 42 of its 50 rooms were occupied at time of the fire. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.(Shanghai Daily)

WUHAN, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Fourteen people have been confirmed dead in a hotel fire that occurred Sunday in central China's Hubei Province, local authorities said.

The fire broke out at 6:38 a.m. in a hotel in the Fancheng District of the city of Xiangyang, the district government said.

The fire was extinguished at 8:50 a.m., according to local firefighters.

About 50 injured have been sent to local hospitals to receive treatment. Some are in serious condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, local police said.
