David Nagy, chair of the National Conference of Student Governments (HOOK) said students had realized that their futures were under threat and were not going to stand for it.

Speaking for the rectors' conference, Laszlo Solti, rector of Saint Stephen University, warned reducing university budgets went against international trends and would lead to lower university standards.

Speaking for the Democratic Teachers' Union, chair Laszlo Mendrey called for an immediate halt to the higher education budget cuts of the past 20 years.

Meanwhile, government spokesman Andras Giro-Szasz blasted the demonstrators, saying that the organizations leading the students were not interested in restoring admissions and scholarships but were worried that the government measures would reduce their personal power.
