The first test-tube baby under intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) method in Bangladesh was born in Dhaka, and the situation of the mother and the baby has been well so far.

The baby boy was born at the Central Hospital in Dhaka on Sunday, and he was claimed the first ever tube baby under ICSI in this country.

Emergency Medical Officer Mohammad Shariful Alam told Xinhua on Monday that the overall situation of both the mother and the baby boy is well, though they are experiencing some common post partum problems.

Dr. Alam said that ICSI is a more advanced method bearing higher success rate compared with the traditional method of Invitro Fertilization (IVF), but ICSI is more complicated, thus more expensive.

In IVF the embryos are allowed to grow for several days in an incubator before placed in the women's uterus, while in ICSI the embryos are injected in the uterus soon after fertilization, addedhe.

According to Harvest Infertility Care LTD., the success rate offertilization in ICSI is 90 percent and the pregnancy rate is 40 to 50 percent, while those of IVF are only 30 and 15 respectively.

Most of the couples could not afford the expenses of ICSI as itcost 330,000 US dollars (20 million Taka) to 420,000 dollars (25 million Taka), said the embryologists of Harvest.

The mother of the baby is among three women successfully conceived through the ICSI method. She gave the first birth, whilebabies from the other two mothers are expected in the year 2004.
