The Israeli government led by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon this week signed its first agreement with the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) led by Yasser Arafat on fund transfers, Thursday's local Haaretz newspaper reported.

The newly signed accord spells out the conditions and supervisory mechanisms for the transfer to the PNA of Palestinian tax revenues collected by Israel, the report said.

The agreement was signed at the beginning of the week by PNA Finance Minister Sallam Fayad and Israeli Finance Ministry Director-General Ohad Marani, the report added.

According to the report, under the accord, Israel is obligated to resume the monthly transfers of tax revenues that it froze when the intifada (Palestinian uprising) erupted in September 2000.

An initial payment of 75 million shekels (some 16 million US dollars) has been transferred last month after an agreement in principle was reached between the two sides.

However, the report said, the accord pertains only to taxes collected in the future, it does not relate to frozen revenues worth 2.5 billion shekels (some 530 million US dollars) that have accumulated in the Israeli Finance Ministry.
