Adults in Wales automatically become organ donors after death unless they have registered to opt out, according to the Telegraph.

Under the new system, those over 18 will become potential donors either by registering their decision to opt in - as they did before December 1 this year - or by doing nothing at all. It will apply to adults who have lived in the country for more than 12 months.

The organs, including kidney, heart, liver, lung and pancreas, donated in Wales will also go to help those across the border who are waiting for transplants in the rest of the U.K.

The Welsh Government has changed the law regarding organ donation registration in order to help more people who desperately need transplants in the country. They estimate that the new system will increase the number of organ donors by as much as 25 percent.

"The latest figures show 14 people died last year in Wales while waiting for a transplant," explained Wales’ minister for health Mark Drakeford, to the Telegraph.

The new system will put Wales in line with other European countries, such as Spain and Croatia, which have already introduced the opt-out register, and have already seen increases in organ donation.

Wales has become the first country in the U.K. to revolutionize its organ donor register. How it works, and the level by which donations increase, will also be closely watched by both England and Scotland.
