Some 45 million people in Shanghai, Tianjin, and Hong Kong will be displaced as parts of the cities submerged, if the global temperatures rise another 4°C, says a report released by Climate Central on Sunday.
According to the report, some 760 million people in populated Asian cities including Shanghai, Hong Kong, Calcutta, Mumbai, Dhaka, Jakarta, and Hanoi will be affected by sea level rise caused by global warming. The U.S. is named by the report as the most threatened nation outside of Asia, with roughly 25 million people presently living on vulnerable lands.
Another World Bank report released the same day says 100 million more people will be pushed into poverty by 2030 if the climate warming continues, with sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia at greatest risk.
Over 40,000 delegates from 195 countries will meet by the end of this month in Paris to discuss a legally binding agreement to keep global warming below what most scientists say is the critical threshold of 2°C of warming. President Xi Jinping, U.S. President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among all the other world leaders, will be present at the meeting.
