Xi-Ma meeting a resolution to oppose ‘Taiwan Independence’

The meeting between top leaders from the mainland and Taiwan on November 7, the first of its kind in the past 66 years, is a landmark in the history of cross-Straits relations. A key step incross-Straits political interactions, the eventhas set an unprecedentedexample for face-to-face dialogue between the leaders.

As President XiJinpingnoted that authorities across the Straits should prove with concrete moves to the world that the Chinese from both sides have the capabilities and wisdom to solve their own problems. He called on the two sides to jointly make a greater contribution to world and regional peace, stability, development and prosperity.

The meeting was arranged in line with the wishes of the people from both sides and accord to the times. Currently, cross-Straits relations need to choose their direction and development path. People on both sides expect peace and stability across the Straits and hope the relationship can yield more positive results.

The meeting aims at avoiding the re-occurrence of historical tragedies and retaining the development of cross-Straits relations. It also intends to create peaceful lifestyles for patriots on both sides and ensure their offspring enjoy a bright future.

The key for the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations in the past seven years lies in that both sides stuck to the 1992 Consensus and opposed “Taiwan Independence.” Without this political foundation, peaceful development will meet enormous obstacles. To push forward cross-Straits relations and to ensure peaceful development, both sides need to consolidate this political foundation and deepen their understanding of the “one China” principle and the nature of cross-Straits ties. They should also unite to oppose to “Taiwan Independence” forces.

The historic meeting between the two leaders illustrates that based on the “one China” principle, both sides could enhance communication, promote mutual trust and control conflicts at the high-leadership level as well. They can also jointly maintain peace and stability in the region and seek common development.
