Lausanne, June 9 -- Candidate cities of Almaty, Kazakhstan and Beijing, China respectively presented their bidding projects to the IOC members in Lausanne on Tuesday morning, bidding to host the 2022 winter sports gala. This will be the last briefing before the 2022 Olympic Winter Games Host City Election on July 31 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
A group of Chinese students from Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne were waiting outside with red flags. Liu Mengying, one of the students, told People’s Daily, “we are coming to show our support for our motherland.”
Illustrating the legacy of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Mayor Wang Anshun told the IOC members that the city of Beijing has fully embraced the Olympic spirit and "experience it every day".
“We have evaluated all possible Games-related risks,” mayor Wang also said, “With strong public support and government guarantees, sound natural conditions, comprehensive experience in Games organization, and your guidance, we are confident that all potential risks can be effectively managed.”
“With the exceptional legacy that the Beijing 2008 Games brought to the city, there’s enough reason to believe it’ll work better,” HuoZhenting, an IOC member from Hong Kong, told People’s Daily.
Philip Craven, the president of the International Paralympic Committee, also show his confidence of Beijing. “Full government support and significantly high public support can be learnt from the mayor Wang’s excellent briefing,”he told People’s Daily.
IOC member Sergey Bubka, a well-known Ukraine athlete, welcomed the central concepts of China’s bid, “Beijing has done a great job for the bid, and it will be a remarkable experience to hold two Olympic Games if the dream comes true.”
Chinese winter sports stars also play an important part in these programs. Yang Yang, two-time Olympic champion in short track speed skating and IOC member, said: “As role models in China, we are deeply involved in our bid. Our opinions and voices are heard. We become more confident after this briefing.”
“Beijing 2022 will provide the best possible sports environment for athletes with outstanding venues and excellent services. And all of our venues will be completed two winter seasons before the Games, providing opportunities for athletes to familiarize, train and compete at the Games venues, including at Test Events,” she told People’s Daily.
Beijing 2022 Bid Committee will also answer the questions from international media and IOC members on Wednesday.
