On June 8, 2015, Sun Jinwei and Wang Yuchao from Henan Province will donate their hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) in Zhengzhou as their stem cells have been matched to an American patient and a Dutch patient.
On June 4, the two volunteers arrived at Henan Provincial Tumor Hospital to undergo a physical examination and have injections of HSC mobilizer.
In 2012 China started to upload volunteer donor data to Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide through the China Marrow Donor Program (CMDP). To date, data for 800,000 Chinese donors has been stored in the computers of Marrow Donors Worldwide. The Henan Provincial Marrow Donor Program will collect a donor's bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells if it finds a matched donor willing to proceed with the donation process, said Wen Meiying, a worker at the Henan Provincial Marrow Donor Program.
To date there have been 488 non-related donations of HSCs including 14 donations to foreign patients.
An increasing number of donors are registering with the CMDP, but some people still suffer from the misapprehension that marrow transplant involves extracting marrow after drilling into bones.
There are two ways of collecting marrow. In the past cells were extracted from marrow, but Doctors now collect stem cells from peripheral blood. The whole donation process is pain-free and harm-free to the donor, according to a doctor at the Henan Provincial Tumor Hospital.
