PHNOM PENH, June 5 -- Cambodia has not seen any case of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) so far, the Health Ministry's Communicable Disease Control Department said in a statement posted on its Facebook page on Friday.

The statement came after MERS has hit South Korea, killing four people in 41 infected cases.

Travels between South Korea and Cambodia are remarkably busy. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said on May 13 during the inauguration of a South Korea-funded Eye Center that there are more than 10 direct flights between the two countries per day.

"As of June 5, 2015, there is no sign of MERS identified in Cambodia," the Communicable Disease Control Department said in the statement.

MERS is a viral respiratory disease caused by a novel Coronavirus that was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012, it said.

"The virus can transmit from an infected person to another in close contact," the statement said.

To prevent from MERS infection, people should avoid close contact with the people suffering from acute respiratory infections and adhere to hygiene rules, it added.
