Premier Li Keqiang hurried to the disaster-hit area as soon as the quake struck Lushan County in Sichuan Province. After a scientific assessment of the disaster and the potential impacts, the State Council made the decision to authorize the local government to take charge of disaster relief, which indicates a mature and effective linkage mechanism.

Prevention: Don’t begrudge investing money on disaster relief.

May 12 is China’s seventh Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day. This year's theme is “Relieving disasters in a scientific way and coping with disasters in accordance with the law.” Dou Yupei, Vice-Minister of Civil Affairs, says that the purpose of creating a Disaster Prevention and Relief Day is to take Wenchuan earthquake as a warning.
