May 12, 2015 is the seventh anniversary of the Wenchuan Earthquake which inflicted great damage on Sichuan province. How is current economic and social development in this region? May 12 also marks the seventh Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day of China. As it is extremely important to improve the people’s awareness of disaster prevention and limitation, how should we do that properly?

Rebirth: GDP growth is faster than the average rate of Sichuan Province

Seven years have passed since the Great Wenchuan Earthquake. Though the disaster inflicted great damage and heavy losses, it also tempered the resilience and optimism of Chinese nation. Though the traces of the quake are still visible, the disaster-hit area now has a new image that shows to the world the power and speed of China’s recovery.

According to data from the Sichuan Provincial Bureau of Statistics, Wenchuan county has made great progress in the recovery from the earthquake. It has reinforced investment, accelerated industrial development, and upgraded people’s living conditions. Major economic indicators in this region are performing better than the overall figures of Sichuan province.

Change: New disaster relief mechanism is set up under Premier’s promotion

Premier Li Keqiang hurried to the disaster-hit area as soon as the quake struck Lushan County in Sichuan Province. After a scientific assessment of the disaster and the potential impacts, the State Council made the decision to authorize the local government to take charge of disaster relief, which indicates a mature and effective linkage mechanism.

Prevention: Don’t begrudge investing money on disaster relief.

May 12 is China’s seventh Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day. This year's theme is “Relieving disasters in a scientific way and coping with disasters in accordance with the law.” Dou Yupei, Vice-Minister of Civil Affairs, says that the purpose of creating a Disaster Prevention and Relief Day is to take Wenchuan earthquake as a warning. Past experience, if not forgotten, is a guide for the future. This special day can also help consolidate national sentiment and enhance the national recognition and call for the Chinese people to contribute to disaster relief.
