NEW DELHI, March 28 -- India on Saturday successfully launched a navigation satellite from the southern spaceport of Sriharikota, the state-owned space agency sources said.

"The navigation satellite, IRNSS-1D, the fourth on the series of seven which will eventually make up the country's own version of America's GPS, was launched at 5:19 p.m. (local time). The satellite was put into orbit through home-made rocket PSLV-C27," the sources said.

The Indian Space Research Organization intends to launch the remaining three navigation satellites by the end of this year.

The navigation system, once integrated, will be used for road and marine navigation, vehicle tracking and disaster management.
