DPRK denounces new UN resolution on its human rights

PYONGYANG, March 28  -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Saturday slammed a new UN resolution on its human rights record, calling it a "farce staged at the UN human rights arena as a product of the U.S. hostile policy" toward Pyongyang.

The resolution "brought to light the ulterior motives of the U.S. and other hostile forces to hurt the dignity of the DPRK and tarnish its image by making much fuss about its groundless 'human rights issue,'" said a statement issued by an unnamed spokesman for the country's foreign ministry.

The statement came one day after the UN Human Rights Council passed a new resolution condemning the DPRK for its serious violations of human rights.

But Pyongyang rejected the resolution and reiterated that the document was adopted mainly based on testimonies made by "defectors from the north," which are no more than fabrications.

"Washington should not poke its nose into the internal affairs of other countries," the statement said, while warning Japan and the European Union, two co-sponsors of the resolution, to stop blindly following the U.S. policy.

In November 2014, the Third Committee of the 69th UN General Assembly passed a resolution that recommends the Security Council refer the DPRK to the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

Pyongyang has voiced strong rejection and called for the withdrawal of the resolution.
