Statistics offered by Zhang Chunxian, Communist Party of China chief of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, during the Xinjiang delegation's group meeting at the annual session of the National People's Congress, have revealed that Xinjiang is making great contribution to the fight against terrorism, although the price is costly.
Police officers' rate of mortality in the line of duty is 5.4 times higher in Xinjiang than the rest of the country. Last year saw the deaths of 230 government officials at their posts, a number way above China's average. Martyrs in Xinjiang account for one-third of the whole country.
These heroes have inspired the whole population to show more respect to Xinjiang police officers and its people. As China's frontline on the war on terror, Xinjiang and its people have borne the brunt of many attacks launched by overseas hostile forces, which are attempting to devastate China's development.
Recent years have seen a growing number of terrorist attacks in Xinjiang, but these hostile forces' big plan to disrupt and ruin this region has apparently failed.
Xinjiang is not Chechnya, the Middle East or a turbulent district in the Balkans. Xinjiang remains peaceful, stable and prosperous despite these disruptions.
Xinjiang's confrontation with terrorism deserves the gratitude of the whole country.
It has played an important role in curbing the expansion of terrorism to other regions. It is the pivot of China's anti-terrorist undertaking.
In the meantime, Xinjiang needs more support. This border region must be more tightly integrated with the rest of the nation instead of being a remote area. People who live in eastern regions should make Xinjiang a priority in their travel plans, and the authorities must spare no effort in promoting Xinjiang's development, such as making the Beijing-Urumqi high-speed railway open to traffic as soon as possible, which might attract a surging number of tourists to Xinjiang.
Xinjiang's stability and prosperity is a precondition that ensures the entire nation can move forward. A handful of people complain about what Xinjiang is going through. As a matter of fact, they don't know this place well. Xinjiang might not be in its best times, but it has managed to put various issues under control. This place is not a hindrance to the whole country. On the contrary, it is moving along with the country.
China has done pretty well in maintaining peace at home although it is an enormous society. Extremists and terrorists might have caused panic in the country, but the people have recovered their composure and are more experienced and confident in dealing with terrorist attacks.
The biggest threat of terror is that it produces terror. However, when more Chinese people know how to respond to it and do not fear it, it will start to fade away. As Xinjiang is giving the country more courage and insights, extremism and terrorism shall perish.
