YANGON, March 6  -- The Yangon City Development Committee will monitor Yangon's air quality by setting up observation equipment at three permanent places in the city in addition to a single mobile unit, according to pollution control and cleansing department of YCDC on Friday.

Three machines are planned to be installed at busy places in Yangon while the mobile device will be used in a variety of locations.

The machines are designed to measure carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and such particular matters as PM 10, PM 5, POM 2.5 and PM 1.

Reduction measures will be considered if the results exceed guidelines, the committee said.

In recent years, most parts of Yangon, Myanmar's famed commercial hub with a population of more than 5 million, have seen a dramatic influx of vehicles.

Emission from vehicles, which have risen concurrently, are considered the leading cause of air pollution.
