A report issued recently shows the use of social media is expanding from young people with higher education in big cities to those of a wider range of ages and lower education in smaller cities.

The post-90s users tend to watch video online, post-80s users do online shopping and post-70s read news, according to the survey on social media in China released by the Global research company Kantar Group recently.

The survey also shows that while enjoying a full virtual life, many people are involved in a busy real life as well. It indicates a contradiction between virtuality and reality.

The survey covered 66,000 web users from 60 cities.

The CIC, social media analytics company under Kantar Group, also found that among the topical issues discussed by 10,000 Weibo users from Nov. 16, 2013 to Nov. 15 2014, entertainment ranks the first, accounting for 25.4 percent, followed by news (19.6 percent), health and beauty (15.7 Percent), work and study (14.3 percent), travel (12 percent) and other topics (13 percent). The survey showed that Wechat is the most popular application.
