BEIJING, Jan. 27 -- The Palace Museum in Beijing, one of the country's most prominent landmarks, plans to set a 80,000 visitor daily cap.

The policy aims to minimize security risks and damage to the buildings, the museum explained in a statement, but it did not say when the limit will begin.

In 42 days out of the opening days last year, more than 80,000 people flocked daily. On seven occasion, visitors surpassed 100,000.

Such a huge number of visitors weighs heavy on conservation efforts, the statement said.

The museum also plans to encourage visitors to book tickets in advance through the Internet.

During the low season, from Nov. 1 to March 31 -- excluding the New Year Day and Spring Festival holidays -- online tickets cost half the price, or 20 yuan (3.26 U.S. dollar).

Gradually the museum expects to move its booking system completely online, the statement said.

From April, the museum will ban tour guides from using speakers and provide audio guides to large groups.
