BEIJING, June 24 -- Three officials are being probed for alleged duty dereliction following a bridge collapse in south China's Guangdong Province that killed 11 and injured 16, the Supreme People's Procuratorate said in a statement Tuesday.
Deng Guoyi, head of the Shenzhen Township, Xie Hanwei, deputy chairman of the township legislature, and Tang Youqing, head of the township's work safety bureau, are under investigation, according to the statement.
On May 3, a stone arch bridge under construction in Liangping Village, Shenzhen Township of Gaozhou City collapsed.
Four people, including the village committee director, two people from the construction contractor and a township official, were detained immediately after the accident.
The unlicensed bridge was built by the village itself. The local government ordered suspension of the project in April, but its construction resumed covertly during the Labor Day holiday.
