HANOI, June 20 -- Having enjoyed a unique and good relationship for centuries, Vietnam and China have a lot in common and should focus more on cooperation , a Hanoi young man told Xinhua during a recent interview.

Nguyen Minh Duc, who had studied in China for two years, said the two governments should settle whatever differences they have amicably as friends and should undertake measures to improve cooperation, especially among the young.

When asked about how cooperation can be enhanced, Duc said both Chinese and Vietnamese people love peace and hope to have a stable environment to do business. "This is the common aspiration of the two peoples, and this should be the basis for cooperation not only in trade but in other areas as well," he said.

Duc said channels should be established for communications between the two countries, adding that cooperation between the two countries is a win-win solution and both sides should exercise self-restraint, understand each other and aim for mutual growth and development.

Nguyen Thi Thuy, 26, an accountant, said that despite setbacks from time to time, the relations between the two peoples from the past to the present have been very good and will remain good in the future. He urged all Vietnamese, especially the young, to value and treasure the good relationship with China and not to resort to drastic actions.

Calling China a big brother of Vietnam, Thuy cited the support China had given to Vietnam during the country's fight against the French colonizers and later the Americans in its long struggle for independence. "We should do things that would make that friendship enduring," he said.

Le Xuan Ha, 28, a waiter, held the same view. Ha told Xinhua the current relations between the Vietnamese and Chinese people " are quite good," adding that if there is a conflict it is superficial and can be resolved peacefully.

"The two sides should cooperate for the long-term development of both countries," Ha said, adding that Vietnam can learn a lot from China especially in manufacturing.

He said he himself uses China-made products, including electronic gadgets, which he said are of good quality and cheaper than Western-made products.
