China and Indonesia on Monday agreed to cooperate on consumer protection, a move aiming at empowering consumers in both countries.

Liu Junchen, vice minister of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) of China and Ardiansyah Parman, chairman of the National Consumer Protection Agency (BPKN) of Indonesia signed the agreement at the Trade Ministry on Monday.

Ardiansyah said that the cooperation empowers consumers to be more alert in protecting themselves and boosts the awareness of the businessmen's understanding on the essence of the consumer protection.

"Hence, the two sides agree to ramp up knowledge, and flows of information and competence by carrying out training exchanges for the personnel from the countries so that they can perform better," he said.

Liu Junchen said that Indonesia has undertaken trade in many sectors with China, so that the cooperation would be beneficiary for both sides.

"With the signing of this MoU, we hope to strengthen the bilateral cooperation of the two countries," Liu said.

China is the main destination of Indonesia exports and one of the top original countries for Indonesia's imported products.

Besides, the countries could exchange experience in settling problems on consumer protection at global level, Ardiansyah added.

"The exchange of information and experience of both countries will be an important part in this cooperation," he revealed.
