BEIJING, June 6 -- Chinese President Xi Jinping met on Friday with Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, who is here for the first China-Russia meeting of institutionalized cooperation in law enforcement and security.

Patrushev also attended the 10th round of China-Russia strategic security consultation.

Xi said the meeting is of profound significance. China, Russia and the region are facing a complex security situation. The two sides should strengthen cooperation in law enforcement and security, and jointly fight the "three forces" of terrorism, extremism and separatism to maintain the peace and stability of the two countries and the region as a whole.

He called on the two countries to strengthen communication and coordination, and jointly promote political settlement of regional issues.

Xi also recalled his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia in Shanghai, saying they reached consensus on many subjects and expanded bilateral cooperation.

Pushing forward its partnership with Russia is an established policy of China, according to the president, who urged the two sides to implement the agreements he reached with President Putin and strengthen cooperation.

Xi also looked forward to meeting Putin in the near future and having an in-depth discussion on major issues of common concern.

Patrushev said the Russian side attached great importance to the first meeting, in which the two sides exchanged views on international and regional security issues and reached broad consensus.

Russia is ready to communicate and coordinate with China through mechanisms including cooperation in law enforcement and security and the strategic security consultation, to continue steady support for each other on important issues concerning their sovereignty and security, and to jointly maintain global and regional peace and stability, he said.

Patrushev and Meng Jianzhu, head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, attended the first meeting of institutionalized cooperation in law enforcement and security on Thursday in Beijing.

Patrushev and Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi co-chaired the strategic security consultation on Friday morning.
