BERLIN, June 6 -- Germany wrapped up a 6-1 win over Armenia thanks to six second-half goals at outsold Coface-Arena in Mainz on Friday.
Joachim Loew's men controlled the proceedings on the pitch for most of the time, yet the "Nationalelf" had to wait until the restart to start their goal festival against resilient visitors from Armenia. Lukas Podolski has large shares on the victory thanks to his goal and three assists.
Armenia staged a bright start as they nearly flabbergasted the hosts at the second minute when Gevorg Ghazaryan missed the ball from very close range.
The chance for the visitors seemed to be a wakening call for Germany as they immediately took the reins to create chances. Andre Schuerrle almost scored the opener but the striker headed Thomas Mueller's cross wide of the far post.
The Germans worked out their best chance through Marco Reus who nutmegged Armenia's goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky before Hrayr Mkoyan scratched the ball from the goal line. The visitors defended deep allowing Germany to uphold their pressure as Jerome Boateng and Reus came close to mark the first goal of the game before the break.
However, Loew's men had to wait until the 52nd minute before Schuerrle tapped in Podolski's build up with his back heel at the near post.
Germany dominated the game but a foul play penalty caused by Kevin Grosskreutz gave the visitors the opportunity to restore parity. Thus, Henrikh Mikhitaryan levelled the scores from the spot with a shot into the bottom right in the 69th minute.
Nevertheless, Germany remained unimpressed and responded just three minutes later through Podolski, who slotted home the 2-1 lead, before Benedikt Hoewedes made it three a minute later.
Armenia were unable to put up some resistance as the Germans were not done with the scoring as Mirsolav Klose tripled the lead to become Germanys record goal getter, with 69 goals, at the 77th minute.
Mario Goetze still had not enough as the youngster donated a brace within seven minutes to round off the 6-1 win over Armenia.
"In the first half we lacked in chance conversion but due to our shape we were able to increase the pace in the second half. We still need a few training session in Brazil to get used to the temperatures," Germany coach Loew said.
Germany depart Saturday from Frankfurt for Brazil where Loew and his 23-men will be staying in a recently build resort, namely "Campo Bahia" in Santo Andre before they face Portugal for their first group game in Salvador on June 16.
