'99 Fortune Global Forum Concludes in Shanghai

The three-day '99 Fortune Global Forum concluded successfully in Shanghai Wednesday afternoon after plentiful discussions among heads of the world's leading multinational companies on the theme of "China: The Next 50 Years. "

More than 800 representatives, including chairmen, presidents and chief executive officers from 300 multinational companies and 200 Chinese entrepreneurs, attended the fifth Fortune Global Forum sponsored by the Fortune Magazine, and they shared views and achieved common understanding on a wide ranges of subjects.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin delivered an important speech at the opening banquet, and met separately with Singaporean Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Gerald M. Levin, president and CEO of Time Warner Inc, as well as entrepreneurs from various other multinational companies.

Over 40 Chinese ministers and provincial governors attended the forum, the largest-ever in the history of the annual event, and they briefed the participants on the latest development in reform and opening-up drive, as well as in the sectors of education, science and technology and telecommunications.

The participants held that a healthily developing China is both an ideal partner of multinational companies and an inviting huge markets in Asia. So far, almost all of the multinational companies ' operations in China have achieved satisfactory economic benefits. They held that the economic development in China needs participation of multinational companies and also provides huge opportunities for their further development. They thought it a worthwhile trip in Shanghai.

Shanghai Mayor Xu Kuangdi attended the closing ceremony this evening, and he congratulated on the success of the forum. The organizer of the forum decides that the 6th Fortune Global Forum will be held in Paris, France in 2000. French President Jacques Rene Chirac made a televised speech September 29 through satellite, sending his invitation to all the participants attending the forum. (Xinhua)
