President busy meeting guests

Shanghai -- Although the Fifth Fortune Global Forum had only just begun, President Jiang Zemin's schedule was already packed September 27, as he met separately with four groups of guests.

When meeting with representatives from Time Warner Corporation, Jiang called this year's forum in Shanghai, a discussion of the next 50 years in China, "a very meaningful thing.''

With the development of information technology, the media are playing an important role in modern life and relations between countries, Jiang said.

He said he hopes that Time Warner will play a positive role in promoting the sound development of Sino-US relations in the new century.

Gerald M. Levin, president and CEO of Time Warner Inc., briefed Jiang on the special China tour arranged by its subordinate media.

The group will focus on informing the world about China, Levin was quoted by a Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying.

When meeting with some of the multinational company entrepreneurs attending the forum, Jiang said that the exchange of views between famous entrepreneurs and economists will definitely have a positive influence on the Chinese and world economies.

China welcomes more foreign companies to invest in China, Jiang said, adding that his country also welcomes entrepreneurs from different nations to take an active part in fostering fair competition in the Chinese market.

During the meeting, the Chinese president pledged that China will continue enforcing its reform and opening-up policies.

According to the Foreign Ministry spokesman, the entrepreneurs participating in the meeting showed a high-degree of interest in furthering co-operation with China.

The President also held separate talks with Singaporean Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew and former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in Shanghai. Both Lee and Kissinger are in town to participate in the forum.

During their talk, both Jiang and Lee agreed that the elder generation of leaders of both countries have the responsibility to push the world in a positive direction.

Jiang and Kissinger met after the evening banquet. The two conducted discussions on issues of common concern, according to the Foreign Ministry spokesman.

But the spokesman did not give details of the meeting.

Both Kissinger and Lee are scheduled to give speeches at some point during the forum.
