A survey conducted by Beijing Statistics Bureau and published on Feb 14 shows a reduction trend in Beijing's nonnative population compared with that of two years ago. At present, about 2.158 million outsiders live in Beijing for one day and above, a reduction of 141,000 people from the previous figure.

According to this sample survey undertaken at 24 o'clock on Nov 30, 1999, about 3/4 of the nonnative of Beijing are from eight provinces including Hebei, Henan and Anhui.

These people live mostly in suburban areas and urban districts. Over half of them rent houses from peasants, residents and work units. Only 16.6 percent of them came in an organized way, 29.8 percent came through recommendation by their relatives and friends, and 53.2 percent by themselves. It is still a hard job to manage nonnative of Beijing.

Some 78.2 percent of the nonnative, i.e., 1.698 million, or 37.4 percent of the total number of Beijing's staff and workers, are engaged in industry and commerce. They have become an indispensable part of the economic development and social life of Beijing.
