Sci-Tech China Speeds Up Development of New Energy Sources

China is taking pains to develop various new and renewable energy sources focusing on hydropower, solar, wind, geothermal and tidal sources, hoping to make up for the declining production of traditional energy sources.

According to the China Energy Research Society (CERS), China is rich in new and renewable energy sources. Statistics shows that China has recoverable wind energy sources of 160 million kw, geothermal sources of 3.5 million kw and tidal energy sources of more than 20 million kw.

In addition, the country's vast rural areas have nearly 300 million tons of biological materials for developing methane gas.

To date, China's annual use of new and renewable energy has reached 300 million tons of standard coal.

Over 200,000 mini and small wind generators have been installed in households in the mountain areas, remote pastoral areas and islands. And China has imported medium and large wind generators from Denmark, the Netherlands, and the USA to equip over 20 wind power plants.

According to the CERS experts, more than 50,000 small-hydro power stations have been set up nationwide. Some 75 percent of the rural households in China have installed coal-saving stoves, with annual bio-gas production topping 1.5 billion cubic meters.

China is also rich in tidal energy, with 90 percent of the source located in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces. So far, a dozen tidal power stations have emerged nationwide with total installed capacity of 20,000 kw.
