As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has played an important role in pushing forward a proper settlement of the East Timor issue. Vice-President Hu Jintao said on January 25 that China will continue to support East Timor's independence.

In a meeting with Jose Alexandre Xanana Gusmao, leader of the independence movement of East Timor, Hu said that the Chinese government will continue to provide as much assistance as it can for East Timor's reconstruction.

Extending a welcome to Xanana, Hu said that China has been concerned about the development of the East Timor issue. The situation there has stabilized thanks to the efforts made by the United Nations and relevant parties. Work during the transition period for East Timor's independence has been proceeding smoothly. "We are delighted about that," Hu said.

Hu also briefed Xanana on China's position on the current international situation and regional issues, saying that China is fully prepared to develop good-neighborly relations with East Timor on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence.

Xanana, who arrived here Monday morning for a four-day visit, expressed heart-felt gratitude for China's support for East Timor's independence. China is the first leg of Xanana's Asian tour.

Xanana said that developing good-neighborly relations with China is in the interests of the East Timorese people. He also briefed Hu on the latest developments in East Timor and proposals for the establishment of a country in the territory.
