Sci-Tech Growth of Telecom Industry Slowing Down in China

Some areas of China's fast-growing telecommunications industry showed signs of a slowdown in the first 11 months last year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The output of program-controlled switchboards increased by 6.2 percent year-on-year to 39.78 million lines between January and November.

However, the production of optical communications equipment plummeted 30.5 percent on an annual basis to 15,186 units, and that of carrier communications equipment dropped 3.4 percent to 7,174 units.

In the 11-month period, the country produced 27.71 million sets of mobile communications equipment, a drastic increase of 47.4 percent.

Production of computers during the time enjoyed a 142.4-percent increase to a total of 5,972 units while that of micro-computers soared 69.4 percent to 4.12 million.

Computer manufacturers in China have enjoyed a rapid growth these years, and recent surveys show that more and more Chinese are planning to buy personal computers. (Xinhua)
