Eager to expand its high-tech sector, Guangzhou has been working hard to create a favorable environment for talented people who want to start up their own businesses. Most of 800 people who attended a recent Talent Fair in Guangdong are Chinese working or studying in foreign enterprises and Institutes such as Bayer, Harvard and companies in Silicon Valley. Dr. Liu Ruilun, director of the Economic Bureau and Technology Bureau in Guangzhou told Xinhua that the most valuable asset these returned students have is that they have not only received advanced education abroad, but also understand the Chinese domestic market. Their patriotism and business spirit contribute to their desire to work in China. Liu said that Guangdong is a primary talent market among high-tech production centers in China because of its booming trade and policies for attracting professionals. A Venture Innovation Park was especially set up for returned Chinese students, costing 250 million yuan. Ma Wenli, who obtained her Ph.D. degree in the United States told of her overseas experience and her decision to come back to China and work in Guangdong. Ma has a spacious 2,000 sq.m. laboratory and she gets 8 million yuan in funding for her research on basic molecule biology at the PLA's No.1 Medical College.
