Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan left Abuja on January 12 morning for Namibia to continue his five-nation African tour.

During his three-day official visit to Nigeria, President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice-President Atiku Ababakar jointly met with the Chinese minister on Tuesday.

Obasanjo reaffirmed in the talks that Nigeria would insist on "One China" policy, adding that the policy is one of Nigeria's basic principles dealing with bilateral relations with China and the policy will not change.

Tang, who arrived here Monday, held talks with Nigerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dubem Onyia Tuesday and they signed a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of a consultation mechanism between the two countries.

On Tuesday evening, Onyia hosted a banquet in honor of the visiting Chinese minister and his 10-member delegation.

Seeing the delegation off at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport were Minister of State Onyia, some other Nigerian officials and Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Liang Yingshu and the staff of the Chinese Embassy.

The Chinese minister is also scheduled to visit Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Seychelles before he concludes his African tour. (Xinhua)
