Edmund Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), has said that the SAR government will adopt flexible measures to make it convenient for Taiwan residents to enter Macao.

The chief executive has also noted that the measures shall not go against the fact that Macao has returned to the motherland, according to Macao Daily News on January 1.

"I'm optimistic about the future development of Taiwan-Macao relationship," Edmund Ho said, adding that economic, trading and cultural ties between Taiwan and Macao will go on smoothly.

In Macao, Taiwan has been a major source of tourists who enjoyed visa-free treatment if they held a "passport" issued by the Taiwan authorities.

As the Chinese government has resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Macao, the validity of the Taiwan "passport" is questioned and appropriate formalities for Taiwan residents to enter the Macao SAR are under discussion.
