North China's Tianjin Municipality has recently launched a 120 million-yuan (about 14.4 million U.S. dollars) project to divert water from the northern part of the city to the south.

The water diversion project involving a total investment of 102 million-yuan (12.2 million US dollars), the largest for Tianjin's rural areas, will help the northern area fight floods while solving the drought problem in the south.

In the first phase of the project, the port city plans to build a 107-kilometers canal linking rivers in the north with those in the south. The project is scheduled to be completed next year.

The second phase will involve the construction of a large reservoir in the northern area for holding water during flood seasons.
