China NPC Official on Macao Electoral Conference Members

A senior official of the Standing Committee of the National People's (NPC) explained the draft namelist of the electoral conference for deputies of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) in Beijing Friday.

Lu Congmin, deputy secretary-general of the NPC Standing Committee, gave explanations to the ongoing 13th session of the NPC Standing Committee.

According to the Macao SAR Basic Law, deputies to the NPC from the Macao SAR will be elected in Macao by Chinese citizens among the Macao SAR residents, Lu said.

In accordance with an election method drawn up by the NPC, the NPC deputies from the Macao SAR should be elected by an electoral conference.

On October 25, the NPC Standing Committee sent inquiry letters to 218 Macao residents eligible for the conference. As a result, a total of 204 people expressed their willingness and readiness to take part.

According to a NPC regulation, all the 204 people should become members of the electoral conference. Since one of them died on November 28, the conference now has a total of 203 members, Lu said.

The NPC Standing Committee will convene the first session of the electoral conference to elect a nine-member presidium, who will elect an executive chairman among themselves.

Also, the NPC Standing Committee will preside over the election of Macao deputies to the Ninth National People's Congress, Lu said.
